It is hard
to believe that we are halfway through the 3rd
marking period. There have been many activities that have
supported student learning over the first half of this school
year. Meade Middle has been selected to host two extremely
important summer programs. The first annual Maryland State
Department of Education Summer Chinese program will be held from
July 7-25. The program is designed as an introduction to Chinese
for students in grades 4-6. Additional information regarding
this program can be found on the official MSDE website. Meade
Middle will also host the first annual Gateway to Technology (GTT)
program for students in grades 6-8. The GTT program is also
being funded by MSDE. It is intended for current Meade Middle 6th
and 7th graders.
On
Wednesday, February 27, we offered the first of a series of
Homework Help sessions. The sessions are facilitated by some
of our teachers on a voluntary basis. The objective of the
Homework Help session is to assist both students and parents
in completing homework assignments. These sessions support our
School Improvement Goal #3 of increasing parental involvement.
Each session will operate on a drop in basis from 5:30 p.m. to
7:30 p.m. Snacks and drinks are provided. The next session will
be held on March 18.
Wednesday,
March 26, our math department will sponsor our second annual
math night. Math night is a night of fun and games for all
ages. Students and parents are invited to come compete in
friendly mathematical competition against each other. Prizes
and dinner will be available.
Lastly,
please make note of the dates for MSA testing. The MSA in Math
will be administered Wednesday, April 2, and Thursday, April 3.
The MSA in Reading will be Tuesday, April 8, and Wednesday,
April 9. Student attendance during testing is extremely
important.
We are in
need of parents to provide snacks and bottled water to serve as
an incentive and a form of nourishment to students during
testing. Your financial contribution would be greatly
appreciated. Contributions can be forwarded to Ms. Mia Smith,
PTSA President. You can feel free to contact the main office as
well.
SAFE & DRUG-FREE SCHOOLS
SERVICES UPDATE
My
name is Vikki Carter and I am the Substance Abuse Prevention
Specialist for the Safe & Drug-Free Schools project. I have the
pleasure of serving the students, staff, and parents of Meade
Middle School twice a month. I have completed teaching drug
abuse prevention lessons to all 7th grade students
and our lessons have gone very well. Students are receptive to
these prevention lessons and usually have many questions.
Drugs are
the number one killer in America and children have easy access
to drugs, especially tobacco and alcohol, beginning in the
middle school years. Drug prevention is especially important
for teenagers because the brain of an adolescent is not
completely developed until 22 years of age. Because the
brain is not finished developing until the age of 22, the
process of addiction happens much faster for adolescents
than for adults, so any experimentation puts them at-risk to
have an addiction problem. In our society, the media gives
children messages about drugs, and they give our children the
wrong messages. As a parent, you can help your children by
talking to them about these media influences on their choices.
Talk with your child about healthy ways of dealing with stress
and let them know that they can talk to you about their
problems.
Parents can
help their child by talking to them about drugs. Ask them what
they know about drugs and talk with them without
lecturing. Teenagers talk with their peers about drugs and tend
to get incorrect information about drugs from their peers. If
your teenager knows that they can talk to a parent about drugs,
they are more likely to get accurate information. These seem
like simple things that parents can do and they are simple. I
am always surprised to hear some of the myths and misconceptions
that adolescents have about drugs. You won’t know what myths or
misconceptions your child might have about drugs unless you talk
to them.
I am
available to talk with parents with questions or concerns and
can be contacted on my cell phone at #443-603-4841 or via email
at
vacarter@aacps.org. . If you think that your child might
benefit from talking with me individually or if you would like
your child to participate in one on my “Children of
Alcoholics/Addicts” groups, please contact me or contact your
child’s school counselor.

News
from Team 7B
Greetings
from Team 7B! We would like to congratulate the following
students who were selected as students of the month for
January: Georgia Bussink, James Cooke, and Isaiah Richardson.
Keep up the good work; you make us proud! With the cold and flu
season upon us, please remember that it is important for
students to be present in school whenever possible. When an
absence is necessary, obtaining, completing, and turning in
make-up work is essential to student success. Advisory periods
on Tuesdays and Thursdays are ideal times for students to catch
up on make-up assignments. Finally, if you haven’t done so
already, please complete and return an “Email Student Progress
Reports—Consent Form. This form authorizes teachers to send
informal progress reports (grade sheets) to parents via e-mail.
The forms may be obtained in the main office or from teachers.
From
the Language Arts Department
Several
students participated in the Young Author’s Contest by
submitting original short stories or poetry. We would like to
congratulate Batu Balimtai of Mrs. Boyce’s sixth grade class for
his original short story “The Aliens of Juhaptu” which won
second place. Way to go Batu! Congratulations to all those who
participated. Keep up the good work!

News from the PE Department
The Meade
Middle School Physical Education Department would like to
welcome you to the second semester of the 2007-2008 school
year. We hope this semester is a healthy and successful one for
your student.
At this
time we would like to make you aware of a change in our physical
education policy. At the beginning of the school year we were
allowing students to wear any color T-shirt and shorts that were
appropriate to be active in for physical education to increase
our student participation in class. Under the suggestion of our
administration to comply with our school uniform policy we ask
that students either purchase a Meade Middle School P.E. uniform
for $18.00 (Meade Middle School gray T-shirt $8.00
and Meade Middle School black mesh shorts $10.00)
or wear black shorts with a plain white
or gray T-shirt. If you have any questions
regarding this change please feel free to contact Mr. Edwards or
Miss Herget at (410) 674-2355. Thanks for your understanding
and support.
Just a
reminder - intramural basketball permission forms are being
handed out during your child’s physical education class. These
forms need to be signed and returned before your child can
participate in the after school intramurals.
Campbell
Labels/Box Tops for Education
We are
collecting Campbell Labels and General Mills “Box Tops for
Education” coupons. With your help the school can purchase
educational equipment and/or items for the children. Please
have your child drop off the labels and coupons in the Campbell
Soup box located in the Volunteer Coordinator’s office. Mr. Bob
loves to give out bulldog bucks to students for the labels and
coupons.
