Dear Parents, From April 23 – May 2, 8th grade students will take the MSA in Science. The MSA science test assesses students understanding of life, physical and earth sciences. Content that has been taught throughout students’ middle years experience is covered. Last school year our students did well on this assessment. At this point the MSA science is not a factor in determining AYP. We are pleased to announce that Meade Middle School will introduce a Cultural Ambassadors program for the 2008-2009 school year. The program is currently in the planning stages, but is designed to foster student recognition of the vital role the arts play in building bridges of international understanding. As you know the arts create unique opportunities for cross-cultural interaction and learning. The Cultural Ambassadors program will aim to foster an appreciation for the rich diversity and cultural commonalities across the globe and simultaneously foster mutual respect. Student participation in the program will be based on student performance, teacher recommendation and student interest during the 2008-2009 school year. It is that time of year again for our annual Book Fair. The Book Fair allows us to continue to promote school wide literacy. This year students will be able to buy one book and get one book free. As parents your involvement with and modeling of reading is primary to our students’ reading success. You are welcome to stop in during the school day to browse the reading materials and make a purchase. Lastly, our next CAC meeting will be held Thursday, May 1 in our school’s Media Center. The primary topics of this month’s CAC meeting will be the 2008-2009 school uniform policy and our proposed Cultural Ambassadors program. Thank you for helping to make your child’s educational experience rewarding. Congratulations to the following students:
New Security Door Bell System We are delighted to have our new security system for gaining entry into Meade Middle School. On the outside of the main entrance you will find, mounted on the wall next to the door on the right side, an electronic doorbell and camera. To gain entrance to the building you will need to press the button attached to the unit to alert the office staff of your arrival. At that time, office staff will be able to view and identify you and any other visitors. As would be expected known family and friends of Meade Middle school students and staff will be buzzed in immediately. You will only need to pull the door. You will notice the relatively quiet electronic sound of the door unlocking. That is your signal to open the door. For those visitors not recognized by our office staff, we will be able to ascertain the purpose of the visit and get a visual description before granting or denying the visitor access to our building. TALKING WITH YOUR CHILD ABOUT MARIJUANA Vikki Carter, Safe & Drug-Free Schools Office Is Marijuana really a problem? Since 1995, the number of 12-17 year-olds using marijuana has doubled. For eighth graders, the percentage of students first experimenting with marijuana has increased to almost 20%!!! Should you be the one to talk to your child? Parents are in the best position to talk with their children about drugs. Schools cannot do the job alone. The choice to use or refuse drugs is highly affected by values and parents shape their children’s values. Parents do not have a problem talking with their children about drugs like crack or cocaine, but they sometimes have a difficult time discussing marijuana with their children. This is because the case against harder drugs is clear-cut, but marijuana is considered by most to be less dangerous. The marijuana of today is 25 times more potent that the marijuana of 20 years ago and it is a mild hallucinogen. Is marijuana really harmful? Here are some facts about marijuana:
Remember, 30 years ago the average first time marijuana user was in their late teens or early twenties. Today, survey data put the mean age of first use at barely 14 and the younger the age of first time users, the more immature and less capable they are of making responsible life decisions. What to say. Ask your child the following questions:
To get more information about how to talk with your children about drugs, please visit the website “American Council for Drug Education” at www.acde.org/parent. Or contact our school’s Drug Abuse Prevention Specialist, Vikki Carter, by calling #443-603-4841 or email her at vacarter@aacps.org. Mrs. Carter will be glad to talk with you or with your child about drug abuse prevention.
