Youth and Tobacco
Despite the long term risk, tobacco use remains widespread among young
people in Anne Arundel County. About 20% of teens smoke cigarettes
regularly, and 4% use smokeless tobacco. The average age of a first-time
smoker is just 13, and many are regular smokers by the time they start

The School Nurse
is responsible for managing medication administration; developing nursing
assessments on special needs students; and developing emergency protocols
for children with chronic health conditions. She is also responsible for
performing student health appraisals, and mandated scoliosis, vision, and
hearing screening. Ms. Ball monitors chronic health conditions, develops
and implements student care plans, advises school teams on health issues,
provides health teaching, makes home visits, and assists with the
management of disabled students in the school.
As a member of the regular school team, Ms. Ball works in conjunction
with Administrators, Guidance Counselors, Special Educators, School
Psychologist, and a Pupil Personnel Worker to develop special procedures
for students, manage immunization compliance, control communicable disease
and improve attendance.

The Health Assistant
in each school is primarily responsible for managing the health room,
providing first aid and administering oral medications as delegated by
the school nurse. At MMS, Ms. Reynolds usually sees 40 to 50 students
daily. She provides on-site care for our students’ immediate health
needs, keeps the families and School Nurse informed of health room visits
as needed, and maintains statistics and health room records on almost 900
students.

All medication
given at school must be prescribed by a physician on Anne Arundel form
2210/0 (Parent’s Request to Administer Medication at School). This
includes over the counter medications. This form is available from the
