SECOND GRADE

Hunger alert!  Our morning is very long and the children get quite hungry since our lunch is rather late.  Please remember to send in a nutritious snack with your child every morning.

Language Arts:   We have begun our final unit centered around the theme "Our Country and It's People".   Through the story selections, the children can begin to obtain a deeper understanding of the history of America and the people who shaped our country as we know it today.  We will be writing to persuade by learning how to state our opinions, give supporting examples/reasons and use persuasive words.  We will also discuss poetry as a form of writing in which the sound and meaning of words is combined to create images and feelings.

Math:   We have started our chapter on Understanding Multiplication and Division.  We will learn how to understand these operations and how to write multiplication and division sentences.  We will end our year by adding and subtracting three-digit numbers mentally and on paper.

Social Studies :   We will be continuing our unit of “Our Country Today”.  Citizenship will be our focus by discussing ways to be a good citizen and how rules and laws help shape our community and government.  We will discuss how democratic skills and attitudes are associated with being a responsible citizen.

Science:   We will be finishing our Earth/Space science unit to end our year by explaining that there are identifiable stages in the life cycles (growth, reproduction, and death) of plants and animals, observing and describing examples of differences among individuals of one kind within a population, and explaining that organisms can grow and survive in many very different habitats.
