The May 14, 2007, meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. with the following present: Kim Burrows, Bob Kanach, Kacey Smith, Danielle Moran, Donna Cook, Trina Dee, Marjorie Doherty, and Lindy Marks
Ms. Doherty stated that no additional suggestions came in for a name so LEAP will be the theme for next year. Mr. Kanach stated that it would be $300 for 500 handbooks, and that he needs to give it to the company by the end of June. He stated that he doesn't require any help getting the information together.
We are still trying to get the Southern AA County cluster together. Mr. Kanach’s cluster meeting was cancelled, but he stated he will bring it up at the next scheduled principal cluster meeting. He did share the idea of the CACs getting together at the previous cluster meeting and the principals said that they would share the information with their CACs. Mrs. Doherty also has the names and phone numbers of the CAC reps from the other cluster schools.
MATH: On May 30, 2007, we will have Math Training for Scott Foresman (SF) at 3:30 -5:30 for teachers and 6:30-7:30 for parents. Parent and students will hopefully be able to check into the website with a user ID and passwords to use over the summer. A letter was put in the CAC box regarding the change and students that might struggle with the switch. Mr. Kanach stated that, as with Saxon, struggling students will be given additional help as needed. This will be addressed further at the meeting on the May 30, 2007. Ms. Smith added that teachers will still be able to teach the lesson the way they think is best, and they will still be following the state curriculum. SF is the vehicle and the Voluntary State Curriculum is the guide. She also stated that SF gives multiple ways to teach different levels. Access online will give students the ability to see their textbooks on the websites. It was stated that SF is very colorful, and uses manipulatives. These will also be available on-line called e-tools. SF helped write problems for the MSA test and matches up better than Saxon with how our children are tested. It also teaches Problem Solving better. The school system has enough books in the warehouse to cover our students now!
SCIENCE: Hands on Science has gone out of business. They are selling kits, but only to schools currently using them. Mr. Kanach will check on Hands on Science in Baltimore. Mr. Kanach stated that he passed on the SERC information to the teachers for consideration as field trips for next year. Ms. Doherty sent an e-mail to a Ms. Harris at the Community College to see if we can have class offered down here. Mr. Kanach will look into NSA, he is also getting together with Ms. Brennan over the summer to discuss Junior Achievement. Wal-Mart is willing to sponsor us.
NEW BUSINESS: Ms. Doherty and CAC are charged with developing a plan for getting LEAP off to a running start next year.
LETTER in CAC Box: Mr. Kanach will address two letters submitted by parents. It was decided that unsigned letters will not be address in the future. However if they wish, their names can remain confidential, letter should be sent to Mr. Kanach. Meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.
