FIRST GRADE NEWS
The countdown to summer has begun! Please continue to check your child’s take home folder daily and sign the behavior chart. The warm weather is finally here. Please do not send your child in flip flops. They are dangerous during recess and also not appropriate to wear during gym.
Reading : In Reading, we are finishing up Unit 8, Games and we will begin Unit 10, Homes. During this unit students will be made aware of different shapes, sizes, and types of homes that exist in different parts of the world. Students will also see the similarities and the differences between animal and human homes. This unit will also help students learn more about the ways homes are constructed and what lies “behind the surface” of a modern home. We will work on the following strategies in Unit 10: summarizing, making connections, monitoring and clarifying, visualizing, predicting, and asking questions. Students will also work on the following reading skills: classifying and categorizing, comparing and contrasting, making inferences, cause and effect and reality and fantasy.
Writing: In writing, we are continuing to work on the steps in the writing process. All students are working on correct grammar usage as well as expanding their sentences. During unit 10 we will continue to work on the following conventions: subject-verb agreement, contractions, possessive nouns, pronouns, and quotation marks.
Math: In math, we are now beginning Unit 10. We will focus on measurement and probability. We just finished with the money unit. Please continue to review money amounts at home.
Social Studies: We will focus on Unit 5: I am a Citizen in Our World Part 2 and I understand about the Earth’s Resources.
Science: During the Fourth marking period students will learn about magnets, living things and resources, pollution, and caring for the Earth’s resources.

Mrs. Castillo and Ms. Purfield’s class will go on Monday, June 2, 2008 and Ms. Harley and Ms. McManus’s class will go on Tuesday, June 3, 2008.
