FIFTH GRADE NEWS

 

Language Arts :   In the final reading unit, Going West, students will examine the perspectives and roles of Native Americans, European settlers and Chinese immigrants in the westward expansion of the United States.   In writing, students will continue to study the different structures of poetry and apply their understandings to selected writing pieces. Students’ poetry drafts will be taken through the writing process, with a special focus on voice and creativity.

Mathematics :   Students will be learning how to convert ratios to fractions, decimals and percents.   They will also learn how to balance equations and will be studying positive and negative integers.

Science :   Following Science MSA, students will continue studying chemistry.   In this unit, students will compare and classify matter by observing the physical properties, describing the states of matter, and investigating the physical and chemical changes that occur.

Social Studies :   Students will continue to examine the Declaration of Independence to increase their understanding of its worldwide impact.   After studying this primary source, students will apply what they have learned and create their own declarations, focusing on fifth grade issues and concerns.   The last focus will examine the three branches of government and the rights of citizens.

Arlington Echo :   The fifth grade camping trip is scheduled for May 21 through 23.   On Wednesday morning, students will arrive at their regular school time with all of their camping supplies.   They will return to the school on Friday in time for regular dismissal.   Permission slips have been sent home and were due on Friday, April 25.   The payment for the camping trip should be sent in at your earliest convenience before the trip.   If your child takes any medications, please return the consent form to school to allow his or her teacher to administer as needed.   Volunteers are still needed, if you are willing to help, please contact your child’s teacher.   A camp information night is scheduled and additional information regarding this will follow in the coming days!
