“AAA” READING

Mrs. Cantor

Parent Information Night

Please plan to join us for the final “AAA” sponsored Parent Information Night of the year on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.   Your children are working very hard to attain the strategies necessary to become thoughtful readers. Help your children maintain all they have learned and avoid the “summer slide” that is often evident when they return to school in the fall. Our topic for the evening is: “Keep Kids Reading.”   It has been shown that unless students read regularly during the summer break, they fall behind about three months in their reading achievement.   Let’s work together to motivate the children to read and sustain their hard-won skills.

You will have the opportunity to learn about activities you and your child can do following the reading of a text to support his/her understanding; to assemble packets of materials that can be used by you and your child to create the activities; collect suggested reading lists for multiple grade levels, as well as books that appeal specifically to boys. Door prizes and refreshments will be available. Your attendance could qualify your child( ren) to receive a free book to enhance his/her own personal collection.

We look forward to seeing you.

Book-It Reading Program

Students participating in the March Book-It program are looking forward to enjoying a Spring Fling for Reading celebration on Wednesday May 28, from 1:30-3:00 pm.   We are planning for games galore, enterprising entertainment provided by Lothian staff members, and sensational storytelling by a member of the Maryland State Department of Education, a summertime snack of wonderful watermelon, desirable door prizes, and a fabulous face-painting booth.   Book-It All Star Certificates presented for student participation in all months of the Book-It program will be awarded. Students will receive their official invitations several days prior to the celebration.   Parent volunteers to assist in making this event a success will be appreciated.   Please contact Mrs. R. Cantor at 410-222-1697 if you are available to help.

We are approaching the final days of Lothian’s revised spring Book-It program.   Students’ April/May Book-It book titles will be counted following the last day of participation, May 14.   All calendars must be returned by May 22 to qualify for a complimentary admission to the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament.   Reminder:   Kindergarten through grade 3 students need to read a minimum of 20 books and all grade 4 and 5 students are required to read a minimum of 10 books.   Books considered “too easy” for a child’s reading level should not be included on the calendar. Happy Reading!
