Field Trip: Our fourth graders will be traveling to the Captain Salem Avery House on Tuesday, May 13. There they will get an opportunity to travel back in time and see how Marylanders lived in the 1800s. The students will also get to go out on a boat and see how watermen worked in our area. Please be sure to send back to school the signed permission slip and money for this wonderful field trip.
Language Arts: The fourth grade language arts program ends the year with an Open Court unit on Early America. There are some wonderful stories in this last unit that will help prepare your child for fifth grade social studies. The students continue to read various novels during their Workshop time.
Writing: The students in Mrs. Reddish’s writing class will be concentrating on writing a biography about another student in the class. They will be going through the entire writing process for this piece. Ms. Applegate’s class and Mrs. Sundquist’s class will have writing with Mrs. Reddish during May and the first week of June.
Math: The focus in math is to build upon what the students already know. Quick, accurate recall of the basic facts is necessary for your child to be successful. The skills that we will be working on include 3-digit times 2-digit multiplication, long division, and solving problems with more than one step needed to reach the solution. They will also be finding equivalent fractions, as well as adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Any real life math situations that you can involve your child in at home would be beneficial.
Science: Mrs. Sundquist’s science class will be ending the year with a unit on ecology and the flow of matter and energy. The students will explain ways that individuals and groups of organisms interact with each other and their environment. They will be looking at food chains and recognize that some source of energy is needed for all organisms to grow and survive. Mrs. Reddish’s and Ms. Applegate’s classes will be studying these science topics.
Social Studies: During the fourth marking period, Ms. Applegate’s social studies classes (Mrs. Sundquist’s and Mrs. Reddish’s classes) will be learning about Maryland’s human and natural resources with an emphasis on the Chesapeake Bay.
As we approach the end of the year, please encourage your child to remember to focus on school. Each child should come to school prepared to work with completed homework assignments and necessary materials. Thank you for your continued support to help all of our students be successful.
