Dear Parents and Glen Burnie High School Community Members,
This winter season has presented many challenges for all of us. Record breaking snowstorms have caused unprecedented school closures and delays. Thankfully, there are signs that warmer weather and outdoor activities are just around the corner. Spring sports geared up on March 1st, and Daylight Savings Time begins on March 14th. On March 3, 2010, the 2009-2010 school calendar was adjusted adding an additional day to make up one snow day.  June 15, 2010 is now set as the last day for students.  This one-day adjustment assumes that the Maryland State Department of Education grants AACPS’ request for a five-day waiver of the 180-school day requirement. Any additional emergency closing days or the lack of a five-day waiver would force another alteration to the calendar. Whatever the outcome, it will be in the best interest of children to meet their educational needs.
Thus far, the school calendar has been adjusted as follows:

  • Third quarter interims will be distributed on March 12, 2010.
  • The end of the third marking period has been changed to April 16, 2010.  Please note that students will be dismissed two hours early on April 16, 2010.  April 9 will be a regular school day.
  • The fourth marking period will start April 19, 2010.
  • Report card distribution for the third marking period has moved to April 30, 2010.

Interims for the third quarter are scheduled for release on Friday, March 12. The lost time will have an impact on instructional delivery.  It is vital that students be in school each day on time and to remain focused putting forth their best efforts in each and every class. Please take a moment to sit down with your child(ren) to discuss their performance and your expectations of them. Acknowledge their achievements and encourage them to strive to improve where they may have fallen short.

Course scheduling for the 2010-2011 school year has begun. Counselors are working closely with students and teachers to ensure that students are on track and following their prescribed four-year plan developed to meet applicable graduation requirements.  Keep in mind that our staffing is based on projected enrollment and class offerings. Decisions made now have a tremendous impact on these projections and are strictly adhered to unless a schedule change is warranted for valid academic reasons, i.e., incorrect level of sequential order, failures, or credits already earned in subject.

We are excited to be participants in a High Schools That Work (HSTW) Technical Assistance Visit (TAV) beginning on March 15. During this three-day TAV, a team observes classrooms; reviews school data; and holds in-depth interviews with teachers, administrators, students and parents and then makes recommendations to help improve the quality of teaching and learning for all students. These opportunities provide us the insight and tools for continual growth as we strive to increase student achievement and develop our students into well-rounded productive citizens.
