Sam Salamy PrincipalPrincipal's Newsletter March 2008Dear Parents, As we approach the 4th marking period of a fast paced school year, I’d like to once again thank you, our students, and staff for everyone’s hard work and continued focus. We recently celebrated and recognized 600 GBHS students at our latest Honor Roll Assembly including well over 100 Principal and Superintendent Honor Roll recipients. In addition, GBHS has received recognition from the Maryland State Department of Education for outstanding performance on the 2007 MSAs. We were commended for dedication to student achievement and for inspiring students to attain higher levels of performance. It was stated, “Your accomplishment serves as a model for others as we work together to ensure success for all of Maryland’s students.”. Along with this distinction, GBHS was presented with a Certificate of Recognition as an Advanced Placement Accomplished School as selected by the College Board. Glen Burnie High School’s AVID Program is Nationally Certified. On April 30, 2008 we will host the AACPS AVID Conference, a very prestigious honor and event. Although nearly three-quarters of the school year is over, many major school events and activities are on the horizon. The following is a summary of important dates: Teachers continue their focus on preparing students for H.S.A. exams in May. Students who have not passed one of the four mandatory/compulsory course exams should either repeat the course or be involved in a remediation program such as the course(s) Passing the H.S.A. All students who entered high school in 2005 or later must either pass all four H.S.A. courses (Algebra I, Biology, English 10, and U.S. Government), have a combined score of 1602, or successfully complete an H.S.A. Bridge Program/Project. Our Parent & Principal Forum in April will focus on the Bridge Program information.
Parents, it is important that you be involved and are aware of the scheduling process as students sign-up for next year’s courses. Please contact your son’s or daughter’s counselor if you have questions or concerns. Please continue to discuss the importance of focusing on learning, good citizenship, and performing at a high level throughout the remainder of the school year. Congratulations to our curricular and extracurricular programs and to the many successes of our students that are involved in such positive school activities. We have much to be proud about here at Glen Burnie High School. I truly believe that we have the best students, parents, staff, and community! Thanks again for your continued support.
Sincerely, Principal's Newsletter January 2008Dear Parents, I hope everyone had a peaceful and happy holiday. As the first half of the school year comes to a close I’d like to thank you, our students, and staff for making student learning the priority at Glen Burnie High School. Our student successes are all of our successes. I’d like to once again congratulate our nearly 600 students who made the Honor Roll this first marking period. Our 9th Grade Academy Team is working hard to improve our freshmen’s academic performance. I’d like to commend our parents, Mrs. Emily Moore, and the 9th grade staff for the many parent conferences that have been conducted over the past several months. If you have not met with your child’s teachers, counselors, and/or administrator, please contact Mrs. Moore, edmoore@aacps.org, or our counselors to arrange a conference. Semester exams will be conducted on the following dates: Semester exams are extremely important assessments that make up 20% of the final grade for the course. Please continue to emphasize the importance of good study habits and a commitment and focus on student learning. It is important to stay involved and informed in regards to the education of your student(s). We are in the process of finalizing second semester schedules while gearing up for next year’s scheduling process. We will be holding a Scheduling/AP Potential Night on February 13, 2008 at 6 PM in the cafeteria. We will also be holding another Parent/Principal Forum on January 31, 2008 in the Media Center. Parents, please continue to remind our students of the importance of making good choices and that appropriate behavior is expected and essential to their success and to the positive learning climate at Glen Burnie High School. Enclosed is information regarding Board of Education and School Policies and Procedures, including addressing Bullying/Harassment. As the Maryland State Department of Education continues the policy of requiring students to display proficiency in the four high school assessments in order to graduate, our teachers are committed to extending extra help to any and all students who need it. While most teachers are available after school Monday thru Thursday, various labs and help sessions are being conducted as well. In addition, activity buses are provided every Tuesday afternoon. In order for students to meet the HSA mandate one of the following requirements must be met:

Sincerely, Dowload Complete NewsletterPrincipal's Newsletter September 2007Dear Parents, It’s hard to believe we are already beyond the half-way point of the first marking period. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our students, staff, and parents for a great start to the new school year and for making our Back-To-School Night, Spaghetti Dinner, and New Student/Freshman Orientation all so successful. If you have not already heard by now, Glen Burnie High School successfully made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for all student subgroups, meeting every No Child Left Behind target for the 2006-07 school year. I would like to thank and congratulate every Glen Burnie High School student, staff member, and parent for the part each of you have played in attaining this very important goal. We have certainly made significant gains toward our ultimate goal that 100% of our students will ultimately pass all assessments and graduate from Glen Burnie High School. We continue our focus on student achievement, on continuing to move Glen Burnie High School in a positive direction, and on our shared vision that “success for all students is the only option”. You can find our complete state testing data at the MSDE websites www.mdreportcard.org and www.makk12.org. The PSAT will be administered to all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders on October 17. It is very important that students take the PSAT and do their very best. The results play an important part in making sound scheduling decisions in addition to other important academic factors. 11th grade students can be eligible for National Merit Scholarships based on their performance. Interims were distributed at Back-To-School Night to parents and on September 28 to students. The first marking period ends November 1. Parents, please continue to encourage your daughters and sons to come to school every day prepared to do their very best. Please have regular conversations with them regarding their classes, school work, teachers, and friends. Encourage them to get involved in school activities and please feel free to contact their teachers, counselors, and administrators. I encourage our Glen Burnie High School parents to get involved as well. The following are some of our parent involvement opportunities at Glen Burnie High School:
