Fifth Grade Buddies
In
the beginning of the school year, fifth grade students are paired
with first grade students. Throughout the school year, they
have activities that are curriculum based and aid in reading and
writing skill development. Through
these activities, the students get to know each other and form a
relationship where character development and behavior modeling are
an important piece. Some of the activities they do together
include reading to each other, writing letters to each other, and
working on projects together. The fifth grade students write
a biography about their first grade buddy and present them to the
first grade as a culminating activity.

| International Week
This is a week long celebration
of world cultures with events planned for each day. Flags from
countries all over the world hung from the ceilings in the
hallways. The events of the week included international music
presented by the Capital Brassworks, a parade with each class
representing a country with student made flags and posters, an
international food sampling with over 30 countries represented,
over 25 presenters to speak to classes about the different countries
they came from or have visited, and the fifth grade international
carnival where 5th grade students researched and recreated games from
different countries. Thanks to all the parent volunteers who make
this happen.

| Drownproofing Fifth grade students
participate in this important water safety program every year. Each
student learns essential techniques for being safe in the water. They
practice rescue breathing as well as water rescuing techniques. These
skills are particularly important in our area where students are
surrounded by bodies of water. These lessons take place at the Arundel
Swim Center in Annapolis.

Crofton Elementary Birthday Book Club
The Birthday Book Club
is a program to increase our library collection, give the students an
opportunity to help in the selection of books for our library and most
importantly encourage reading among our student body.
To honor the birthday (or for
any other special occasion) of your child or grandchild, niece or
nephew, cousin, or any child special to you - join the Crofton
Elementary Birthday Book Club today!
It is simple!!! Visit
your favorite bookstore and choose a book that you like from an approved
list of books. We don't worry about duplicates, because it seems
we can never have enough copies of the books students like!!
Because this is such a
special honor, a bookplate with the birthday child's name will be placed
in the book and to publicly acknowledge your child's participation in
the Birthday Book Club, a photo of your child holding the donated book
will adorn the Library's Birthday Book Club Bulletin Board.
The birthday child has the honor of being the first to check out
the new book!
A list of donors and
the title of the book(s) donated will be published in our school
newsletter and on the PTA web page!!
This is a wonderful way to
commemorate a very special occasion and to help our library media center
maintain a high-quality collection. You may join the Birthday Book Club
at any time during the year.

Fundraising Programs
There are a number of retailers in the area who offer opportunities
for cardholders to donate a percentage of their purchases to CES.
Giant, Safeway, Office Depot, Staples, and Target all provide these kind of
donation programs. Check out their websites for more
information on how to sign up to give toward our school.
Each year, we
participate in the General Mills Box Tops for Education program. Each box top that
is turned in is worth $$$ for CES. This money will help fund school equipment, supplies, books, etc. Each Box Top that
is collected has a value of 10 cents. If you have any questions or would like to help with this program, please contact
CES.
We have a print cartridge recycling program. Please
send in all used inkjet and laser cartridges. If your
workplace uses ink cartridges, consider letting us recycle them
for you. The money is being used to buy new cartridges for
the school.
Community
Outreach
Each
year, CES participates in fundraising efforts for the American
Cancer Society. This year our staff challenged the
students to buy 500 "Believe" bracelets. Their
reward...being greeted by staff members on the roof of the
school dancing to "On the Roof."
