Rounded Rectangle: Dear Chesapeake Community:

Fall is in the air and Chesapeake has had a wonderful start to the school year. There is a positive energy flowing through the building with everyone working on making the 2008-2009 school year a great success. The Independence and Intervention (I & I) program that was initiated at the beginning of the school year is in full swing. There has been some very positive feedback from teachers, students and parents. One of the most outstanding teacher comment is that students are not waiting till the end of the marking period to get their makeup work completed. The students are getting their work completed and teachers are trying hard to stay on top of the grading so that students who have earned independence can take full advantage of the program. Students are saying that even though they have earned independence they are able to return to their classes to finish work or get extra help to continue to improve their grades. Parents have commented that they are happy to see real grades more consistently and they are able to support their children better. The program is not flawless and as the school becomes aware of a concern it is being addressed. Continue to contact the school with both your concerns and compliments. We want this program to give all CHS students a successful school year.

Congratulations go out to five outstanding seniors who have been named Commended Scholars in the National Merit Scholarship Program. They have been placed in the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition with their scores from the PSAT/NMSQT test the fall of 2007. The young people named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their strong performance in this highly competitive program. The Commended Scholars are Laura Anzaldi, Audrey Duhaime, Ashley Messaris, Isis Tabrizi and Kerry Toole. This year again Anne Arundel County Public Schools are administering the PSAT to all 9, 10 and 11 grade students on October 15 during the morning at all the high schools. The 11 graders will be eligible for the 2009 National Merit Scholarship based on this year’s scores. CHS would like everyone to take advantage of this program both for eligibility and practice for future scores. The school will operate a full day program with an abbreviated class schedule. Seniors will have a class meeting and their first panoramic picture of the entire Class of 2009.

CHS is committed to the safety of everyone. Throughout the school year there will be practice drills to prepare everyone in the building for many types of emergencies that could happen during the school day. Monthly there will be a fire drill and an emergency scenario conducted. The students will be informed that these activities are only drills and that there is no reason to be alarmed. Teachers will notify students in advance of how the class will react depending on the type of drill that is being practiced. They have informed their students of emergency exits and where they are to go should evacuation be necessary. Students and teachers have been extremely cooperative with the first two fire drills this year and it is expected that all future drills will be as successful. The drills are not lengthy and every effort is made to return to regular instruction as soon as possible.

Also as part of the safety focus for the school there are 50 cameras installed throughout the building. They do not view every inch of the building but do display a large vision of the common areas such as lobbies, cafeteria, gymnasium, major hallways and stairwells. The cameras are not located in classrooms or bathrooms/locker rooms. These cameras are able to archive information for a short period of time for review. They are tools that administration uses to review incidents that may necessitate disciplinary action.
