Rounded Rectangle: Dear Chesapeake Community:

Welcome. The 2008-2009 school year is just about ready to start and the high school has been busily preparing for the opening days. We are fortunate again this year to have a separate opening day for first time 9th graders. August 25 will give new 9th graders an opportunity to see the school without large crowds.

Students will receive their schedules and get to attend all their classes. An assembly will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium called “Making High School Count”. Parents of 9th graders are welcome to attend and sit in the upper section of the auditorium. On August 21 at 6:30 p.m. the school will host a Parent Night for the Class of 2012. Administrators and counselors will be present. Freshman may attend and take a walk around the building to become familiar with Chesapeake.

Chesapeake High will open for everyone on August 26. Classes will begin promptly at 7:17 a.m. For the first two days everyone will report to their administrative homeroom (Assignments are by grade and will be posted throughout the building.) During homeroom students will receive their schedules, student handbooks will be reviewed, agenda books and other critical information distributed. It is important that parents review this information during that first week of school and return all materials that require signatures. The most important item that CHS needs returned immediately is the Emergency Card. There is a form in this newsletter and students will receive an additional one in homeroom. This form is vital should an emergency arise at school and we need to have immediate contact with a parent. Make sure the form is complete and includes alternative phone numbers and people to contact if you are not available. Often school personnel scramble to find contact information when the student is not able to supply the necessary phone number. Please include your current e-mail address as well.

A new initiative to improve student performance will begin at CHS this school year. The CHS Cougar Independence and Intervention program will occur daily for all students. Each day after second period students who currently maintain a 76% or better grade in their respective classes will have the opportunity to 1) report to a silent study hall in the auditorium, 2) report to the cafeteria for free time or 3) access a Media Center computer for school related work. Students who currently have a 75% or lower will be returning to that class on the designated day for a remedial intervention to give them support to improve their grade. This could be a time to make up classwork, receive additional attention on a difficult concept, and take a missed quiz or test or review challenging work. The I & I period is for 25 minutes and will follow the A/B schedule over an eight day rotation. The rational behind this initiative is threefold: 1) CHS wants to have all students meeting with academic success 2) to increase the number of students who are academically eligible and can participate in the CHS extracurricular programs 3) provide time during the school day for makeup work and remediation. Conversations with students and parents over the last school year were positive about allowing more time during the day for students to get everything done. This program was in place at Broadneck and Northeast last school year and was received well. For the first four weeks of each semester students will attend all I & I classes. At the fourth week teachers will start to send home grade sheets so that beginning week 5 the I & I rotation will be in place because grade status will be known.
