Rounded Rectangle: Dear Chesapeake Community:

BIG NEWS – CHESAPEAKE IS NOW ELECTRONICALLY SENDING THIS NEWSLETTER! We are continuing to become GREEN. Thank you for sending in email addresses so this could be possible.

This newsletter brings very exciting news for Chesapeake High School. First, we have received word from the Middle States Association who visited the school in March, 2008, that we have been fully recommended for Accreditation for Growth Certification. Chesapeake is identified as an accredited high school which is very important to our current students and students that continue beyond our doors in post secondary educational paths. A second piece of exciting news is that we were told in November that we had made AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for 2008. Since we missed this distinction in 2007 for English – Special Education this news is excellent. With the first marking period grades posted Chesapeake has more good news. Forty-seven percent of the students made the Honor Roll. This is a 5 % increase over 2007. Also 80 % of the students are eligible for extracurricular activities which is also a 5 % improvement over 2007. The overall GPA for the school is 3.051 compared to the 2007 GPA of 2.957. Some of this exciting report card data can be explained with the implementation of the Independence and Intervention program (I &I). Students who have less than an 80 % in their class are returning during the school day to that class to have the opportunity to improve their grades. There have been positive comments from teachers, parents and students about how students are taking advantage of the time. There are still some kinks that need to be worked though but it certainly has gotten off to a very positive start.

Congratulations to four Chesapeake High School teachers who have achieved National Board Certification. This is a prestigious distinction that requires a two year application, submittal and evaluation process. CHS is very proud of Laura Cimbolic - Math, Geraldine Cvetic - Media, Maria Harris - Science and Sarah Petri - English for their passion and dedication to teaching.

The county has notified every home that there are two surveys that we would like to have parents complete. The surveys can be accessed through the AACPS web site. The necessary passwords are listed further in the newsletter. One survey relates to parents satisfaction with the school system and the other is on bullying. Completing both of these surveys helps both the school system and Chesapeake get a sense of how we are performing. Please take a few minutes before December 23 to give us your thoughts. Your time and effort are greatly appreciated.

The new marquee project is still underway. Progress has been very slow but I can tell you that the permit application was hand delivered to the County before the Thanksgiving holiday. We may start to see some activity in front of the school sometime in the New Year.

Thank you to the PTSA, the Environmental Club, SGA and Steve Barry from Arlington Echo for the first phase of courtyard improvement. As you come into the school a small section of the courtyard has been planted with native plants to improve the appearance of the entrance. The PTSA obtained a grant for the Unity Garden. This project will be carried on with the Environmental Club eventually planting the entire courtyard. They are currently applying for grants and will also get some financial support from the SGA. Hopefully the entire project will be completed before the end of the school year.
