The Environmental Club meets every Monday in Room 204 (Science Department) and on Wednesdays for recycling. Our goals are to learn about the environment in a fun and hands-on way, to preserve and restore the natural environment, and to motivate the student body to act on behalf of the natural environment. We are currently involved with the Magothy River Association in an oyster restoration program, participate in the Envirothon and Chesapeake Bay Bowl, go on field trips, and learn about the environment and conservation in our weekly meetings. The Chesapeake High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association, the school's environmental club and the local nonprofit Unity Gardens Foundation joined together last Saturday to begin a planting project to renovate and beautify a large landscape bed along the front entrance to the school.

The PTSA received a $1,000 grant from Unity Gardens, then worked with the environmental club, parent volunteers and school employees to create a detailed landscape plan. The first section was installed last Saturday.

Funding is in place to complete the project in the spring. The garden will consist of native plants and help control erosion. Two mulch walkways will allow students to pass through the garden without disturbing the plants.

More than 25 people excavated the grounds and planted more than 90 native plants.

Students who participated in the planting included Gabrielle Sandusky, Jesse Robertson, Sebastian Piato, Adam Jones, Shelby Cropper, Britney Thomas, Chris Kroh, Colin Kroh, Arick Loesck and Julia Dunshee.

Volunteers included parents Diane and Rick Dunshee, Regina Cornelius, Linda and Joe Kroh, Louanne and Richard Loeschke, school staff members Allison Williams, Emily Cieslinski, Meredith Martin and Steve Barry, coordinator of outdoor education for Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Kim Eckert, executive director of the foundation, helped facilitate the purchase of the plants through the group's partnership with Homestead Gardens. She shared her expertise in native horticulture as the plants were selected.
