Assessing School Safety and
Security
In
May of 2004, Anne Arundel County Public Schools began a
process to assess safety and security in all of its 117
school facilities.
The assessment, slated to be completed during the
fall semester of 2004, will provide a benchmark to base
current and future safety and security needs.
This pro-active approach is being conducted as a
part of the crisis mitigation process.
The
initial assessment is being conducted by a professional
company experienced it safety and security assessments
in public schools.
During and following their work, a team will be
assembled and trained from within the school system to
conduct ongoing and follow-up assessments.
The
goals
Anne
Arundel County Public Schools is committed to a
Multi-Hazards approach in assessing schools potential
security and safety vulnerabilities.
The
process

Identify
risk (hazards) factors:
Identify and recommend ways to mitigate
man-made, natural or technological risks.

Address
issues surrounding school science labs

Evaluate
the schools access control measures
-
Assess
traffic patterns around schools to minimize risks
-
Evaluate
the school’s plans for responding to
terrorist/active shooter/disruptive activity
-
Assess
the school’s capacity to identify potential
violent persons
-
Observations
are conducted both during the day and at night
-
Emphasis
is on procedural changes and the use of available resources
