Reading/Language Arts Instructional Emphasis


Phonemic Awareness: the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds-phonemes-in spoken words
Phonics: the process of linking sounds of spoken language to letter symbols of written language and combining them to make words.
Fluency: reading with speed, accuracy, and proper expression; performing multiple reading tasks, such as word recognition and comprehension at the same time.
Vocabulary: the words we must know to communicate. 
Text Comprehension: the constructing of meaning; the reason for reading.
