Timeline Activity

Task One | Task Two | Task Three | Timeline

Task One:  With your partner, you will examine these images relating to Chinese immigration during the time period of this story.  You will make some assumptions about the life of Chinese immigrants in California in those days.  One of you, the Web Partner, will keep this page open to display each of the images, one at a time, while the other, the Inspiration Partner, will also open Inspiration.  The Inspiration Partner will create a textbox and enter both your names in the textbox.  Name and save according to your teacher's directions.

In Inspiration, use the RapidFire* Tool to brainstorm ideas about:

  • What story does the picture tell?

  • Why they would have undertaken such a long journey

  • The challenges they may have faced

  • What kind of treatment they may have received

  • Chinese culture at that time

  • Remember to save again when you have finished. You may leave Inspiration open.

Remember to save again when you have finished.

Task Two:  You and your partner will each return to this web page and click on the link to the timeline.  Scan the timeline, then each of you will select two dates or topics to investigate further using the links from the timeline page.  Begin your research by writing questions you hope to answer.  Record details of your investigation in a Cornell notes format or on a graphic organizer of your choice.

Task Three:  You and your partner will share the details you each found about your topics and will try to answer the questions that you had developed.  Next, revisit your Inspiration web and make any revisions or additions to your earlier assumptions.  Lastly, add textboxes to your web and write two predictions and two questions about events and details that you expect to take place in this story.  Save.  After reading the first half of this book, you will return to your Inspiration document to reflect on your predictions and answer your questions.

Go to the Timeline.
