Preview Guides

Description

Preview guides are "purpose setters" derived from important statements taken from the passage to be read. Students need to be aware of the need to set purposes for gaining information as they complete reading assignments. Preview guides serve as a framework for predicting what information may be in a chapter or section of a chapter. They also provide a basis for discussion and sharing viewpoints about learning material.

Preview guides:

· set purposes for reading information to be learned

· are a framework for class discussion about information to be read

· are used to check for understanding after reading a chapter

Procedure

1. Use a specific chapter or section of a book.

2. Select the important statements from various paragraphs in the reading selection.

3. List the sentences. Develop a true/false or yes/no statement based on the information. Provide true/false or yes/no spaces before each sentence. Leave spaces between each sentence.

4. Students think about each sentence and choose an answer based on prior knowledge or guess.

5. Students read the chapter to prove or disprove their choice of answers. Brief notes should be recorded to support answers.

6. Teacher leads discussion of statements to check comprehension of chapter. (This step can be done with partners or in small groups.)
