Terms Associated with Copyright Laws
- Original: The purchased program.
- Back-up: The one copy allowed for archival purposes.
- Single Machine License: A program that can only be run in
one computer at a time, e.g. Apple works.
- Multi boot License: A program for which you are licensed to
boot and run the program in more than one computer, e.g. Milliken Word
Processor, Sunburst Software - Geometric Supposer, Bank Street Writer.
- Site License: Allows the user to make multiple copies of programs
based on some agreement. Some possible site license agreements:
- limited to the number of machines at a location
- flat limit on number of copies
- unlimited copies
- limit is based on the number of students or teachers, e.g. all MECC
software, LogoWriter
- Shareware: A program that can be copied in unlimited numbers.
The agreement states that if the person who copies the program uses
it, he sends a fee to the author.
- Public Domain: Programs that have been donated to the public.
They can be copied and used without fees.
