What is the EXPLORE program?
EXPLORE is sponsored by the Gifted/Talented/Advanced Programs Office of Anne Arundel County Public Schools in conjunction with Anne Arundel Community College for elementary school students presently in grades one through six.
Courses are held during the fall and spring semesters of the school year and during a special summer session. Each course offers opportunities for students to extend their learning experiences.
Unlike other programs, the emphasis of EXPLORE is to reach "students of potential." Programming for EXPLORE is done to nurture "potential ability" and to provide an atmosphere in which talent and ability may be revealed. The goal of nurturing potential ability is quite different from the goal of accelerating or enriching which are goals generally associated with gifted and talented programs.
EXPLORE is not intended to replace instruction provided at a student's school. Courses are not designed or arranged with a sequence in mind whereby one course leads to another of higher level difficulty. Rather the intent is to provide students with opportunities to have many and diverse experiences with topics that extend learning provided through regular curricula, that are of current interest, and that stimulate the thinking and creativity of students.
The names of students successfully completing an EXPLORE course are submitted to their school. Students absent from two or more sessions will not be considered as completing the course, and their names will not be forwarded. However, students may and are encouraged to attend remaining class meetings.
Transportation to and from each session must be arranged by the student's parents.
