| New Hampshire
was founded by John Mason. The settlers of New Hampshire came for
religious freedom. They also wanted to escape the harshness of the
Puritans in Massachusetts.
New Hampshire was first settled in 1623, only three years after the Pilgrims had settled in Massachusetts. At first they worked the land for food. Later they used the land as an industry. They cut down trees for giant lumber and paper making. Minerals were taken from the mountains and hills for mining. Rivers and lakes were used to get power for mills and factories. They also built ships along the coast. In 1665, the Wampanoag and the Narragansett joined together to save their hunting land from shrinking anymore. Metacom, also know as Prince Philip, led the attack to drive the colonists out of New England. The colonists fought back and pushed backed the Indians. Many died on both sides. The war, known as King Philip's War, ended in 1676. New Hampshire was the first colony to adopt its own Constitution on January 5, 1776. New Hampshire's people played an important role in United States History. |
