Introduction

Now that you know what a legend is and you have read one, you are ready to begin gathering ideas for your own legend.

Step 1

First, you are going to read 2 legends written by other children.  The first one is called "The Man Who Wanted to Live Forever".   The second one is called "How the Cockatoo Got Its Crest".   As you read each legend, think about the characteristics of a legend.

Step 2

You have seen that good legends can be written by children.  You need to come up with a good starting point for your legend.  Look at the titles and try to decide on a topic for your legend.  You may use one of the actual titles listed, or choose one of your own.  You may also change any part of a title.  Write the title you will be using on the graphic organizer "Legends Part 2".  (You will be able to change your title later if you need to.  All authors work that way!)

Step 3

Think about your title. Decide what you want to happen in your story.  Use the graphic organizer to write in the elements of your story. Now, use the graphic organizer to help you write your story.

Conclusion

Think about the characteristics of a legend.  Review your story, and think about whether or not your story will win the contest.
