(Add Up the Facts) PDF

Essential Understanding: Graphical mathematical models or representations can be used to solve problems and describe results.

Maryland Learning Outcomes:
gather relevant data and compare data sets to answer a question
(MLO 3.1)

Indicators:
Students will analyze graphs, compare the information that is represented and determine if one graph is a better representation than the other.

Students will interpret and describe situations mathematically.

Technology Indicators:

Introduction:
You have just finished collecting Census 2000 Surveys.  During the data collecting process you came across several graphs displaying the world population.  In addition to the current world population, it gave some predictions.  The information was so exciting that you decided to look at two graphs more in-depth.

Graphs serve a useful purpose.  They are an organized way to represent data.  There are many types of graphs.  Some graphs you may be familiar with are bar graphs, line graphs, pie graphs and pictographs.  Each of these types of graphs compare data or show change over time.

Step One:

The Growth Spurt graph really caught your attention because it had great graphics.  Look at the pictograph below.  Based on your training you notice that this pictograph is missing a key. Before answering the following questions look at the graph to determine what an appropriate key would be.

Step Two:

The line graph shows change over time.  Click on the link below to view the graph. To return to the miniQuest click the back button.

Continue to answer the following questions in the word processor from step one.

  1. What would you label the x and y axis on this graph?
  2. Does this graph show a similar trend to the pictograph in step one?  Explain your response.

Conclusion:

Think about the graphs you have just analyzed. Complete an Add Up the Facts organizer to prove that the world population is growing.  Be sure to include information from each of the graphs to support the main idea.
