Program Outcome:
   Students will demonstrate the ability to read for a variety of reasons. Students will demonstrate effective writing in academic, social and personal situations for a variety of purposes, audiences and topics.
Maryland Learning Outcome:
   MLO-W(3.5.4) Students will write information reports for an intended audience and purpose that present a literal understanding of the topic.
Technology Indicator:
    (4.2) Students will design, develop, publish, and present products using technology resources that demonstrate and communicate curriculum concepts to audiences inside and outside the classroom.
    (5.3) Students will employ technology tools to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.
Student Outcome:
    Students will use the Olympic oath as a model to create a classroom oath.


Introduction:
The 2002 Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City, Utah. The 2004 Summer Olympics will be held in Athens Greece. Each athlete that participates in the Olympics must take the Olympic oath.  Read the Olympic oath and decide with your partner its importance.  It is your job to create a classroom oath.  To what will you pledge your word?
 
Step 1:
    Read the Olympic oath by clicking the link.  Think about the importance of this oath to the competing athletes when competing with others from around the world.
Step 2
    Identify why the Olympic oath is important to all of the athletes. Complete the "Olympic Oath" graphic organizer.
Step 3
    Use the words in your organizer to write a classroom oath. Use a word processor to write your oath.

Conclusion:
 Now that you have read the Olympic oath, think about other situations in which you may need to take an oath. Why is it important to keep a promise?
You may want to return to the website to learn about the Olympic symbol and flag. How could the oath help you with the design of a classroom flag?
