Olympic Symbol and Flag

Essential Understanding
Symbols and flags often represent a culture's beliefs and values.

Introduction:
    The greatest athletes in the world compete in the Olympics.  They are represented by a flag with a symbol of five rings.  It is your task to create a symbol to help design a flag to represent your grade.


 
Step 1
    Read the descriptions of the Olympic symbols and flag.
Step 2
    Use the descriptions of the Olympic symbols as a model to help you create a grade level symbol.
    Think about items that would best represent your grade level in our school.
Step 3
    Use a drawing program such as KidPix or Appleworks Paint or Draw to create your symbol.
Step 4 
    Write a description of your symbol and explain why you chose it to represent your grade.

Conclusion
    Now that have learned what the rings on the Olympic flag symbolize you may want to do further research to discover what the stars and stripes on the American flag symbolize.

Student Outcome:
    Students will use the Olympic symbol and flag as models for designing a classroom symbol and flag.
Program Outcome:
 MLO-R Students will demonstrate the ability to read for a variety of purposes. Students will demonstrate effective writing in academic, social and personal situations for a variety of purposes, audiences and topics.
Indicator:
   MLO-W(3.5.4) Students will write information reports for an intended audience and purpose that
present a literal understanding of the topic.

Technology Indicator:
    (4.2) Students will design, develop, publish, and present products using technology
resources that demonstrate and communicate curriculum concepts to audiences inside and
outside the classroom.
    (5.3) Students will employ technology tools to locate, evaluate, and collect information
from a variety of sources.
