Step 1: Choose a bee.
  • Together, you and your partner will choose to gather information about either bumble bees or honey bees. To help you choose, think about the question. 
Is it easy to tell which bees are bumble bees and which are honey bees?

Step 2: Research your bee.
 
Find out:
  1. Where it lives (habitat).
  2. What it eats (diet).
  3. How long it lives (lifespan).
  4. How it is helpful or necessary to the environment.
  5. How it is harmful.

Step 3: Have a group discussion.

Meet with another team to talk about what you and your partner have learned. Answer these questions for the other team. Make sure you explain why you feel the way you do.
 

  1. What have you learned about your bee?
  2. Is your bee needed by humans and the environment?
Together discuss:
  1. How are the 2 bees the same?
  2. How are the 2 bees different?
  3. Decide which bee you think would best represent Broadneck students?

Step 4: Write a letter to the Principal. 
 
Write a letter to the Principal asking her to hold a school wide vote for the mascot.  Tell her why you feel there is a need for selecting a specific bee.  Be sure to include that the students will be more supportive of the mascot if they help to choose it. Also include any research you found important.

Step 5: Design a poster with your partner.
 
On the poster you will be advertising for the bee you chose .  You are trying to persuade other students to vote for your bee as the Broadneck Elementary School mascot.  Make sure your poster is colorful and organized.  (Hint: Check out the rubric)

Conclusion- Now that you have researched your bee, written your letter, and created a poster, all in support of your choice for mascot, there is only one thing left to do: Vote!  Be sure to vote for the mascot of your choice and have your voice heard.
