Introduction:
Changes in Europe began at the beginning of the 11th century when Europeans crossed the Mediterranean Sea during the religious wars known as the Crusades.  At this time, the desire to spread Christianity to areas outside of Europe began.

During their travels, the Crusaders brought back merchandise to their countries. For the first time, Europeans became aware of the fine silks, gems and spices available in India, China and Japan.  Europeans then desired these goods in order to enrich their lives.  Thus, new trade routes were needed to obtain these goods.

The discovery of the printing press in the mid 1400's allowed for more printed books, which again told of the riches in far away lands.  However, it wasn't until the late 1400's, when new navigational equipment was invented and better designed ships were built, that countries began to truly explore lands outside of Europe.

As a part of this WebQuest, you will be researching 3 explorers of this time period in order to be able to reconstruct their voyages on a world map.  You will also use the information to conclude why European countries began these explorations.
