   MLO-R-(1.5.5)  Students will summarize text in a manner that reflects that main ideas,significant details,and its underlying meaning.

    present a literal understanding of the topic.

    (5.3) Students will employ technology tools to locate, evaluate, and collect information
    from a variety of sources.
Student Outcomes:
     Students will read to obtain information on the scientific accomplishments of Benjamin Franklin.
       Students will demonstrate the ability to read for a variety of purposes.


Introduction:
       We have been studying about Benjamin Franklin in class and know that he was an inventor. His name has also appeared on a list of American Scientists. Our principal stated that she did not realize that he was also a scientist. It is your job to locate information that proves he was a scientist. Visit the Franklin Institute website and write a letter to our principal to inform her of at least three scientific accomplishments of Benjamin Franklin.
Step 1
Read the article "Benjamin Franklin, Scientist" .  Look for information that will prove to the principal that Benjamin Franklin was a scientist.
Step 2
Gather information from the article and complete the graphic organizer "Benjamin Franklin's Accomplishments". List three of Franklin's scientific accomplishments including details for each. (You may use Kidspiration or Inspiration to create a graphic organizer to list the accomplishments and details)
Step 3

            Use the information in your organizer to write a letter to our principal to inform her of Benjamin Franklin's scientific accomplishments. Use a word processor to write your letter.

Conclusion
You have learned about three of Benjamin Franklin's scientific accomplishments. Think about how these accomplishments have affected your life.  How would your life be different without these accomplishments? Describe some modern day inventions that may have fascinated Ben Franklin.
