Stand Alone PCs

Computer does not boot up properly:

Windows 95: (Freezes at the Windows95 screen)

• Restart computer by pushing the reset button
• Then let the computer load in Safe Mode
• Restart the computer from the task bar
• Note: You may need to run scan disk, if so just follow the directions on the screen

 Windows3.X

• Hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys to reboot computer
• If that doe not work try turning the computer off count to 10 and turn the computer back on.

Frozen Computers

Windows 3.x:

• Hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys, (if the application is not responding the computer will tell you to hit enter);
• If it is a DOS program, close to program manager, look for MS-DOS icon, if not there, hit Alt and Esc until it appears. Click on the icon, go to settings and terminate.
• If the computer is still frozen try again, after two times, you need to turn computer off and back on.

Win95:

• Hold down the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys the computer will prompt you with all open tasks.
• Click on the application that you are having trouble with and then click on End Task.
• If mouse is not working, press the tab key until specific application is highlighted and then press Enter.

Monitors

• If you turn on the computer and the monitor and there is no picture, check the following:
• Brightness controls on the monitor,
• Power switch is turned on, if there is no green light,
• Check to see that the power cable is plugged into the outlet and the monitor.
• Make sure that the monitor power save is disabled.
• Then make sure the display is plugged into the CPU. If you still cannot get a picture, try another monitor.
• If there is an electrical burning odor coming from the monitor turn it off and unplug it. Call the helpdesk to report the problem.

Sound (Windows95)

• If you have no sound check the following:
• Look at Taskbar for the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
• If is there, Double-click the icon, the following will appear.
• Under Volume Control make sure MUTE ALL box is not checked. If it is not checked then move the volume lever up by dragging the button under VOLUME.
• Check the volume button on the sound card in back of the CPU.
• No Volume control Icon present
• If you have large fonts from K-3 (elementary school) and RS1-10 (middle school) the volume on task bar is not available, students will have to go to:
• Start
• Programs
• Accessories select volume and set the volume control
• Or a teacher can log-on with a teacher ID, set volume by going into the control panel multimedia icon and set the volume.
•  If these do not fix your problem, call the helpdesk.

 Missing Task Bar

Win3.1: Go to Windows at the very top of Program manager Highlight the group needed and the window should come to the front
 
 

Missing Icons and Shortcuts

Windows95:

• Look under Start Icon under programs to see if the program is there
• Let your Sysop know they will make an emergency call to the Help Desk

Windows 3.X:

• Click on File,
• Click on New,
• Click on program item, and then type title (description),
• Click on command, type drive letter colon (C:\)
• Then click on browse. Locate application,
• Click on .exe file,
• Click on OK,
• Click on change icon, if you receive a message that says nothing is available - click on OK, icons will appear, if your icon is not at the beginning of group, scroll to the end, it is usually in beginning or end. If your icon is not available, choose something else and click on OK.
• Then click on OK again.
• Your icon is now on your desktop
