Guidelines for Planning a School Web Page

Step 1

Determine a purpose for posting a page on the World Wide Web. (This statement should be featured on the Home Page.)

Step 2

Share the purpose with the school community and elicit their input.

Step 3

Assign responsibilities. These might include:

  • Organizing web design professional development sessions for teachers, parents and students.
  • Surfing the web to visit other schools' web sites to make note of how they are designed and how they are organized. If you keep your design clean and simple, your visitors will not grow tired of the site and will be pleased with how quickly it loads in their browsers.
  • Organizing / receiving information for the web pages. How you organize your sight determines how your internal links to other pages will work. Consider this process very carefully. A well-organized site ensures that visitors can find what they are looking for.
  • Designing the "front door" or Home Page.
  • Using web publishing tools such as Netscape Composer, Microsoft Front Page or Macromedia Dreamweaver to publish your pages.
  • Setting up procedures for collecting regular updates from appropriate sources and communicating updates to administrator(s).

Step 4

Elicit feedback from the technology committee throughout the entire process.

Step 5

Share the final web page(s) with the school community. Obtain the Principal's approval on the appropriate form and print all web pages prior to sending it to the Central Office for posting on the World Wide Web.
