Plagiarism: Useful links to help detect plagiarism

Today it is very easy for students to plagiarize from the Internet. High school students are very adept at using copy/paste functions to harvest ideas or entire reports from the Internet. How can teachers combat this problem?

  • Teachers can help to prevent plagiarism by restructuring their assignments.
  • Teachers can use the Internet to help detect when students have plagiarized. Search engines provide a great tool for helping to detect plagiarism. From the student's report, select a phrase that seems a bit beyond the student's general ability. Type that phrase into a search engine, select "phrase search" and the search engine will find the original source. Some multi-search engines capable of this type of search are: http://mamma.com and http://metacrawler.com
  • Other great sites for detecting and preventing plagiarism are: http://www.plagiarized.com and "Cut-and-Paste Plagiarism"
