Literary Magazine I

in this one or two semester elective, students participate in a production company to conceptualize, create, and publish a school-wide literary arts magazine. They analyze exemplary publications and apply national criteria for evaluating whole magazines and original student work on poetry, fiction, drama, the essay , music, visual arts, and other media. Students develop the essay, music, visual arts and other media. Students develop and apply a code of ethics concerning the publication, treatment, and verification of works' originality. Students develop and implement a plan for soliciting original submissions, ensuring diversity of student voices and encouraging participation in the expressive arts across the school community. Students collaborate in all aspects of production. They organize staff, tasks, and budget and create a thematic concept that governs design and content. While students collaborate and contribute in all phases of magazine production, the focus or Literary Magazine I is on developing the skills necessary to evaluate a wide variety of student art and writing and make effective editorial choices that support design concepts and respect the integrity of an artists' intentions. In the editorial role, students collaborate on a style guide to be refined each year, and develop policy and procedures to deal with plagiarism. They contribute to design layouts, select media, make revisions and implements other publishing decisions.

In this one or two semester elective, students form a production company to conceptualize, create, and publish a school-wide literary arts magazine. Literary Magazine classes are one or more semesters in advanced writing, design, editing, and publishing techniques. Students may self-select and individual focus on either the art or literary staff and in either creation or publication. Students in Literary Magazine II study and apply fundamentals of design including dominance, unity, contrast, and balance. Students learn to manipulate white space, repetition, spot color, typography, and frames to create innovative spreads using advanced techniques of publishing software during electronic paste up. Students assume the responsibility for balancing innovation within the confines of overall unity of the magazine. Students experiment with computer-enhanced graphics, digital photography, and self-selected area of production as part of editing, design and graphics teams and ensure final publication and distribution of their school-based magazine featuring original literary works and art by students.
