Considerations for Sending and Viewing Graphics
via E-mail and the WWW
-
What attachment can I view directly from my web-based E-mail account?
Graphics on the WWW must be either .gif or .jpg file types. In
order to automatically view a graphic sent via E-mail, the graphic must
be a .gif or .jpg.
-
When I create a graphic in KidPix or ClarisPaint, what is the default
file type?
Unfortunately, most graphics programs save as .bmp (bitmap files on
a PC) or .pict (pict files on a Mac). Newer graphics programs (ClarisPaint
5.0) will allow you to save or even translate a graphic to .gif or .jpg.
-
But why can't I send a .bmp file through E-mail?
Sending and receiving .bmp or .,pict files is fine as long as you realize
that Netscape will NOT be able to view anything but .gif and .jpg. (You
first download the file and then view it in another application that will
read that particular file type, such as ClarisPaint).
-
What will happen if a friend sends me a graphic with a .bmp file type?
If an attachment type is not supported by your browser, you will see
the name of the attachment in the body of the message. You should click
on the attachment name and download this attachment to the appropriate
directory (on the file server) or a floppy disk. You can then view the
graphic using whatever application it was created for.
-
What is the size limit for attachments?
The size limit for attachments is usually 2MB which can be either one
attachment of 2 MB or several that add up to that amount.
-
How many attachments may I include with each E-mail message?
Edmail allows 5 attachments per E-mail
-
What is the cache and why should I clear it?
The word cache means a place of concealment or safekeeping. While using
Netscape the cache allows you to return to previously viewed pages without
pulling the page back from the WWW. (It is pulled directly from the cache
on your hard drive.) There are limitations to this space however: once
the cache is full, your browser slows down and may freeze. Another consideration
is privacy, E-mail messages will remain in the cache until they are cleared...anyone
who knows hot to access the cache will be able to read your mail.
-
Okay, HOW DO I CLEAR MY CACHE?
Select NETWORK PREFERENCES from the OPTIONS menu
Click on the CACHE tab (if it is not already present)
Click on the CLEAR DISK CACHE NOW button (the MEMORY CACHE will get
cleared when you turn your machine off)
