Introduction

Fractions are a very important part of the pre-algebra curriculum.  Our class will begin the school year with a unit on fractions.  By working on all of the operations associated with fractions (lowest terms, equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions) we are able to assess needs on basic skills such as multiplication and division.  During this quest you will work on many skills that you have already learned.  Consider this practice.  When you feel that you are ready, you will solve a real life problem involving all of these skills.  Enjoy completing this web quest and remember, it's almost lunch time!

Process

This webquest is designed to give you practice with fractions.  You will begin with the basics.  Task 1 allows you to play a game identifying common fractions.  This may be too easy for some of you.  Simply complete the task and return to this screen to begin task 2.  Task 2 involves some work.  You will retrieve a worksheet from a website and complete some problems asking you to reduce fractions to lowest terms.  If this is easy for you, you may go ahead to task 3.  If you have difficulties, you can go to another website and practice reducing fractions by playing a fun game.  Task 3 requires you to identify equivalent or equal fractions.  It is really important that you understand the concept of equivalent fractions.  Your final task, the one you will be graded on, will assess your ability to use equivalent fractions in a real world problem.

Task 2

Now it's time to put pencil to paper!  You are about to visit to a worksheet that will give you practice on reducing fractions to lowest terms.  Print the worksheet when you are finished.  When you have the worksheet in your hands, click on the "check answers" button to see how you did.
Click the pencil to get your worksheet.  Go ahead and complete The first 10 problems on the worksheet.

Check your answers.  If you got all 10 correct, move on to task 3.  If you missed any, complete the rest of the worksheet.  Click if you need more PRACTICE.

Task 3

It's time to work on equivalent fractions.  Another word for equivalent fractions is equal fractions. Click the pencil to go to the equivalent fractions worksheet.  If you're not ready, click practice.  Remember to click the back button when you are ready to return to this page.

Assignment(yes it will be graded)

Here's the situation.  You are the owner of a new pizza parlor in Harwood.  Everyone that has visited your restaurant has absolutely loved it.  People love your pizza so much that a large group from Cleveland has decided to take a bus trip to Harwood to see the sights and eat your pizza.  84 people will be coming to eat.  You are smart so you have planned ahead.  You had the group from Cleveland send their order to you 3 days early to give you time to prepare.  Each of the 84 people ordered 2 slices of pizza with 1 topping.  1 pizza contains 4 slices.  Here's the problem!  It's the morning that the Clevelanders are arriving and you have 4 hours to prepare the food.  You try to find the order that the group sent you and realize that you threw it away the day before.  You have to figure out a way to make as many people happy as possible.  You're not a mind reader.  How are you going to know what kinds and how many pizzas to prepare.  I will grade 3 parts of your assignment.  First, you need to look at a table that shows the favorite toppings of 130 random people surveyed.  You will be asked some questions about that table.  Second, you will create the plan for feeding the 84 visitors from Cleveland.  Third, you will use information from your plan as well as data from the table to write a letter to the leader of the group from Cleveland to explain the situation and justify your choices.  Go to table and questions.  When you have studied the table and answered the questions, go ahead and open a WORD document to write your letter.  If you are stil having problems with equivalent fractions, go back to task 3.  Remember to print your work.  This will be graded.
