Welcome

We welcome one new teacher to second grade this year, Mrs. Edginton (new to school).  We are looking forward to a good year with new friendships being formed and old ones renewed, lots of learning and plenty of fun, discovering new ideas.

Daily attendance is critical during the testing weeks! Please do not schedule doctor’s appointments or family vacations during these times! It is vital that your child is here to take the tests at his/her grade level. In this way we can learn more about each student’s strengths and weaknesses and can plan for ways to help him/her reach his/her highest potential!

Language Arts

This is our third year implementing the Open Court Program.  The students utilize several techniques to help build and maintain  reading skills.  Each child focuses on oral reading to build fluency as well as writing, listening and speaking skills.  They will have opportunities to generate questions based on a topic and conduct investigations or research.  The students are reading text that demonstrate the theme of sharing stories this first marking period.  Other themes for the year will include : Kindness, look again (animal camouflage)  fossils, and our country and its people.

Remember to read for Book-It every night.

Math

We will be studying whole number concepts of addition, subtraction, place value and multiplication.  We will also study geometry, measurement, graphing & statistics, probability and fractions.

Continue to study math facts nightly.

Social Studies

Understanding how communities connect is our first unit.  We are investigating our economy as we learn about scarcity and productivity.

Other units for the year include: I can be a hero (people who make a difference) and I can plan a parade.

These are the Open Court units of instruction for second grade. If you see items (artifacts-items or objects related to the theme), newspaper or magazine articles, etc. that might support these themes, be sure to send them to school with your child!
