| Sunset Elementary is proud
to be in its third year as a professional
development school. Interns from Towson University are with the students
from August until December and January until May, working with the staff
and learning to improve themselves as teachers and professionals.
At Sunset there are currently eight Towson interns working with their mentor. |
|
|
These interns are currently
students at Towson University, completing their elementary education degree
by learning from the professionals at Sunset and High Point Elementary.
The interns will graduate in December and recieve their teaching certification
and bachelor's degree in elementary education. |
Interns are hard at work in
the classrooms, teaching few lessons at the beginning of the semester and
gradually working into teaching full days of class for the last few weeks
of the semester. Interns also work one on one with the students during
tutoring sessions held for students who need extra help during recess.
They also become actively involved in the community, helping with McDonalds
night, reading clubs and other school sponsored events to complete their
30 hours of require community service. |
Student teachers at Sunset
are required to complete a number of in school service hours, which are
spent in the classroom everyday, five days a week. They also must develop
hands-on lesson plans using the constructivist approach to learning, which
states that students learn not by sitting and reading from a textbook,
but from doing and actively involving themselves in the material being
taught. |
