Sunset Elementary School Media Center

Sunset Elementary School has several reading clubs that offer various incentives such as: raffles, prizes, rewards and lunchtime chats.  Regardless of your reading level we have books for you.  Choose from our early readers - Beginner Chessie 1 & 2, and Chessie, Jr.  Move on to chapter books in Chessie or for more advanced readers, we offer Black-Eyed Susan novels.  We also have a wonderful computerized, targeted reading-level program called Accelerated Reader, which offers a cumulative progress record, and computerized comprehension practice quizzes.

Media Center Policies & Procedures

Our media center is the heart of Sunset Elementary School and provides a rich learning environment whereby books, reference resources, audiovisual materials, magazines and electronic databases are offered to students, parents and staff to meet both curricular and recreational needs.

Our media center is open for students, parents and staff from 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  daily.  Students are permitted to come out to the media center for book check-out or reading club every morning after they check in with their teacher.  When announcements come on the intercom, students are to return to their classroom.  Students also come to the media center on a fixed schedule for media instruction, curriculum related projects and book selection.

Kindergarten students, together with their parent/guardian, may participate in the weekly reading program “Read to Me”.  Students in grades 1 and 2 may check out one book [2 if participating in a reading club] for a one-week loan period.  Students in grades 3 - 5 may check out two books [1 additional book if participating in a reading club] and one magazine for a one to two week loan period. Books may be renewed when needed.

Overdue notices will be sent out at least every marking period.  If a book is lost or damaged a notice with the book cost will be sent home.

The media center is fully automated and borrower cards are stored in the media center.  The media center has a very friendly and supportive staff that will happily offer assistance with finding any needed materials.
