From the Principal’s Desk:

Dear Families:

What a wonderful year we have had at Odenton Elementary.  Our children have learned many new lessons and grown so much!  I want to wish our fifth graders “good luck” as they move on to middle school.  We will miss you!

Have a fun, exciting and safe summer break!

Tutoring

The last day for tutoring at Nichols-Bethel Church is Tuesday, May 20, 2008.  Thank you Nichols-Bethel for providing this wonderful service to our students!

Emergency School Closings

Please keep in mind that individual schools have to close sometimes when the rest of the county schools are open.  For example, elementary schools have closed due to the loss of electricity.  When this happens, we are relying on the plan that you provided to us in August so that we can get your child home safely.  If your plan has changed or you need a new form, please contact Diane Gallow at 410-222-6514.

Don’t forget to sign up for automatic e-mail notification regarding school closings at Schools-Out.Com. Enter your e-mail to receive latest school closing status notifications.  This will keep you informed of what is happening at your child’s school.

Open Door

Open Door is registering children for the fall of 2008.  The Open Door before and after school program provides students with breakfast before school, after- school snacks, and in both sessions offers choices, puzzles, games, toys, crafts, outdoor play, and a quiet homework area.  Hours are 7:00AM until school begins and after school until 6:00PM.  Call 410-825-6300 for more information.

24 Tournament

A huge congratulations to our Odenton student competitors in the regional 24 Tournament held in April. Deanna Valerien, Danielle Sharo, Craig Allen, and Thomas Zhang all showed tremendous composure under great pressure during the tournament.

We are proud to announce that two of our students will be going on to the County Competition, May 7 at Old Mill Senior High. Thomas Zhang place third in the regionals and Danielle Sharo won first place.

Congratulations to all of our club members for your active and consistent participation!

Odenton Elementary School A Professional Development School Update

We are coming to the end of a very successful school year with our Goucher College student interns.  Mr. James Steven is completing his student teaching with Miss Price and is also working part-time as a long-term substitute in a special education class.  Miss Lisa Lipson is also completing her graduate studies as well as working as a long term substitute in the 4th grade.

How does Odenton Elementary benefit from being a Professional Development School?

  1. Increased teacher to student ratio.
  2. As part of the partnership, faculty and staff from Goucher College offer various types of assistance and courses to faculty members at a PDS school. Odenton has several staff members pursuing their Master’s degrees in Reading through Goucher.
  3. Qualified future teachers that are familiar with AACPS are hired in our county.  Two Goucher graduates and former interns with master’s degrees are teaching at OES.
  4. Collaborative planning by 2 instructors in the classroom.
  5. Increased ability for small group and one-on-one instruction.
  6. Fresh new ideas and teaching methods.

Suburban Scene Magazine

The Suburban Scene Magazine will be covering many of the Odenton Elementary events.  You can access this through www.suburbanscene.net. We are excited about our new partnership with this publication.
