SCHOOL RULES & GENERAL INFORMATION

This information is designed to familiarize you with our school and to answer some of the most commonly asked questions.  More detailed information can be found in our school handbook which is available in the school office.

ARRIVAL
The morning bell will ring at 8:20 for students to enter the building.  Students who arrive at school before the morning bell rings will stand outside IN LINE at the front door.  Children are permitted to ride bicycles to school.  All bikes are to be  parked at the bike rack.  Bike locks are strongly suggested.  All persons visiting the school are asked to park their cars in the parking lot, not in front of the school building.  The driveway is considered a "fire lane" and must remain for emergency vehicles.

ATTENDANCE
A note signed by the parent is required if a child is to be dismissed  from school early.  Anyone picking up a child before dismissal must sign the Early Dismissal Book in the office.  State law requires a written excuse for every absence.  Tardy students will report to the office for an entry slip before going to their class.  Pupils, other than bus riders, arriving at 8:45 are considered tardy.

CAFETERIA
Breakfast and hot lunches are served each school day at Oak Hill.  Free and reduced price meals are available to students whose families are eligible according to an income scale.  Applications are available at the school and may be accepted any time during the school year.  All applications are kept confidential.  Lunches may be purchased daily by a cash purchase or a check can be written to Oak Hill Cafeteria for a designated amount of lunches.  Each time your child purchases a lunch, the cafeteria manager uses your child's "credit card."  This can be used daily, or only occasionally.  This method is highly encouraged since it eliminates the need for your child to carry money to school.

COMMUNICATION
A newsletter is sent home monthly.  In addition to the newsletter, special announcements from the school or PTA are sent home with the students.  Cafeteria menus are sent home as a part separately.  When you have concerns or questions, please call the school office (222-6568). To contact a teacher, please leave a message for a return call to be made.  To contact the principal for a conference, please call the school office and the secretaries will arrange a convenient time for your request.

CONDUCT
NO CHEWING GUM IS ALLOWED ON THE SCHOOL PREMISES.  Students are expected to WALK SLOWLY in the building and on the right side of the halls.  If it is necessary to keep a child after school, the school will advise the parents AHEAD OF TIME, so they will be able to arrange transportation.

DISCIPLINE POLICY
The staff has organized and composed a working policy, which we feel is fair, whenever disciplinary action is needed.  In most cases, the classroom teacher handles his/her own discipline.  Usually, misbehavior in the cafeteria, on the playground, and bus is sent tot he principal.  Bus drivers are required to fill out a separate discipline form before the principal sees the child.

DISMISSAL
Students will be dismissed in the following ways:
bullet Walkers and car riders will be dismissed first.
bullet Bus riders will be called as their bus arrives.
bullet No student should cross the driveway, walk in between the buses or cars or leave the sidewalk for any reason unless the duty teacher crosses them.
bullet After students leave the building, they are not allowed to re-enter without the permission of the duty teacher.
DRESS CODE
Students have the right and responsibility to choose their attire and to arrange their personal appearance in a manner, which is healthy, safe, inoffensive and not disruptive to the educational process.  Accordingly, students are prohibited from wearing clothing, hats, jewelry, bookbags or other articles of personal appearance which: depict profanity, vulgarity, obscenity or violence, promote use or abuse of tobacco, drugs or alcohol, may create a health or safety hazard, or may create a significant risk of a material process or the operation of the school.

HOMEWORK
Homework should be assigned only after a skill has been taught and the child understands the complete process to be used.  Homework can be assigned individually on the following basis: incomplete classroom assignments, additional time needed to study for tests, extra drill needed to develop accuracy and speed with number facts and concepts, extra practice needed to master a skill, more practice needed for word recognition lists, mastering vocabulary words.  Homework should not be used as punishment, but as a reinforcement.  Approximate time limit for primary grades - not to exceed 20 minutes per night.  Approximate time limit for intermediate grades - not to exceed 40 minutes per night.

LOST AND FOUND
All articles found in the school or on the school grounds are taken to the office and placed in the lost and found box.  Parents are encouraged to claim lost items.  To avoid loss, each child's clothing should be labeled with first and last name.

MEDICATION
If a physician deems it necessary that a student receive medication during school hours, the following conditions must be met before medication may be given by school personnel:
bullet Written instruction from the prescribing physician which include the date of order, name of medication, dosage, directions, comments and length of time medication is to be continued.  Medicine must be in a container which has been labeled by pharmacist or physician with the name of the child and medication.
bullet Request signed by PARENT AND PHYSICIAN asking that medication be given during the school hours.
bullet Covenant Not to Sue and Indemnification Agreement signed by the parent and/or guardian.
MONEY COLLECTIONS
For trips, weekly readers, etc., please send the money in a sealed envelope with your child's full name, grade, the amount, and the purpose stated on the outside of the envelope.  Make checks payable to Oak Hill.

PARTIES
Two parties may be held each year during class time.  The staff will make this determination at the August inservice meeting.

REPORTING YOUR CHILD'S PROGRESS
Parents are informed of their child's progress at parent-teacher conferences held once during the school year.  It is hoped that parents will take the responsibility for scheduling additional appointments, as the report card alone may not sufficiently interpret a child's progress in school.  The report card indicates that an assessment has been made of the child's present level of achievement and of his educational needs.  Teachers at Oak Hill are willing to confer with the individual parents during the school year, provided that an appointment to do so is made in advance.  Please call the school office in order to arrange for a conference at a date and time convenient to both parties.  Interim reports will be sent home for any child who has a "D" as his/her grade or who has dropped two letter grades from midway through the marking period.

SAFETY PRACTICES
Bus evacuations are scheduled three times during the school year, September, December, and April.  Duty teachers will review the procedures to follow during these practice evacuations.  Fire drills are held monthly.  A report is sent to the Board with the date of the fire drill and how many minutes needed to evacuate the building.  Emergency procedures are needed to be formulated for your child when an emergency occurs.  This could mean an early dismissal due to inclement weather or other incidence that can produce a crisis.  On the back of the Emergency Form you will are requested to complete the procedures your child should follow when there is an early dismissal.  Parents must establish a plan of what to do/where to go with their children in the case of both an emergency closing or early dismissal.

VISITORS TO THE BUILDING
All parents and visitors MUST FIRST report to the office when entering the building.  It is necessary to schedule ALL conferences with teachers ahead of time, in order for teachers to make preparations for the conferences and more importantly, that there is no interruption to the instructional program.  We urge your cooperation in this matter, even if the conference is needed for a minor concern.
