Mayo Elementary:

A Maryland Green School!

Raising the American Flag

On Monday, June 2, 2008, Mayo Elementary hoisted the new Green School flag for the first time.  With the entire student body and staff present, members of the Mayo Environmental Club attached and raised the symbol of all of our efforts for the last two years.  The award was presented to our school on May 29, 2008, and we also received a white pine tree which will be planted in the front of the school.  It is not just the school that made this happen!  If it wasn’t for the help and support of our community, we would not have been able to accomplish this goal…many, many thanks to all of the parents and community organizations as well!

Part of the application to be a Green School was the planting that took place on Earth Day this year.  The day was a huge success, with the first phase of planting our front beds with indigenous plants completed.  We would like to thank all the parents who were able to come and help that day.  It would not be possible to hold an event such as this without the support of our parents…you are the best!  We will be holding a fall planting day in late September, so watch for information about this event when school starts back up in the fall.  There will be weeding and watering to do all summer long.  If you can, take an hour or two and work on the beds.  Any and all help will be appreciated with the upkeep throughout the summer months.  If you have any questions about what you can do, please feel free to contact Mrs. Woodling (lwoodling@aacps.org) any time.

Don’t forget all the ways to “Be Green” throughout the summer months.  Setting your thermostat at 70 or 72 saves an amazing amount of energy.  Get your compost bin set up and going this summer to have organic fertilizer for your gardens and yard next spring.  Ride bikes or walk whenever you can instead of driving the car.  Take advantage of all the outdoor activities available in this area where you can be outside with your children enjoying the natural beauty of where we live.  Places like Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary and Smithsonian Environmental Research Center are only two of the many that are close at hand.  And of course, remember to always REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE!  Everyone have a safe and healthy summer!
