  Citing Sources

It's very important to give credit where credit is due. That is why you need to cite sources to tell people where you got your information. If you looked up your information in a dictionary, an encyclopedia, and then used an online website, you will write down those three sources in your bibliography.
If people are interested in learning something else about your subject, they can easily go right back to your sources to read more. Your teacher may also want to check to make sure you have your facts straight.

It's okay to quote the work of another person, as long as you put quotation marks around the words they used, and give them credit for what they said.

Benjamin Franklin once said,
"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

Or, you might want to put what Mr. Franklin said into your own words. That way you try to keep the meaning the same, but change the wording a little. You might say:

Benjamin Franklin thought going to bed early was a good idea. He believed it would help you wake up early. He also thought that getting a good night's sleep would improve your health, your finances, and your intelligence.

Did you notice that Benjamin Franklin is mentioned even when he wasn't quoted directly? That is because he still must be given credit for the idea, even if you change the wording. The idea is still his.

Tricks of the trade :

  * Keep a running list of ALL your sources as you go.
  * Be sure to jot down author's names, and page numbers.
  * Don't forget to write down who published the work & where.
  * You'll also need to know the copyright date.
