Destination ImaginationDestination Imagination (DI) is an after-school program to challenge creative thinkers. Students participate in tryouts and the highest scoring students are selected for the DI teams. Each team has an adult coach. Each team is asked to solve a problem with specific guidelines. The value of the program is that the students themselves create a solution to the problem. The team coach is not allowed to help with the solution. It takes about five months to solve a problem. At the end of five months, teams meet at a regional competition. All the teams who solved the same problem compete for 1st or 2nd place. If a team receives 1st or 2nd, it goes on to the state competition. If a team receives a 1st at states, it goes to the final competition, the worlds. Everyone at Crofton Woods is very proud of our DI teams!

The Publishing PalaceBegun in 1997, the Publishing Palace is a volunteer program that provides writing enrichment for students in grades two through five. Dedicated volunteers work with students "one-on-one" to take a piece of writing from rough draft to final copy. A student's finished work may take the form of a bound book or a laminated "poetry poster." Parent volunteers work in many different capacities within the Publishing Palace program. Typists, book binders, book cover makers, and volunteers who work directly with students are several of "the openings" we recruit for early in the school year. Training workshops are provided for each position. Last year, nearly 200 students published a piece of writing and were honored at the annual Publishing Palace Author's Tea in June! If you are interested in learning more about the Publishing Palace, please contact the reading teacher.

Reading Incentive ProgramEach year in early spring, Crofton Woods has a schoolwide reading incentive. Though the theme changes each year (1997 - Books Change Lives, 1998 - Reach for the World - Read!, 1999 - Take Flight and Read!), the goals remain the same; to motivate our students to read for pleasure and to raise money for Sarah's House, a ahomelss shelter in Anne Arundel County. Participation has increased each year, with Crofton Woods' students reading over 18,000 books and chapters last year! The students earn theme related prizes throughtout the incentive, and our PTA donates a penny for every book the children read. "Reading for Sarah's House" has become a yearly event that everyone looks forward to in the spring.

The Guest Reader ProgramCrofton Woods has an organized guest reader program for each grade level. A workshop is held early in the school year for parents who are interested in volunteering as a guest reader. An effort is made to have a regularly scheduled guest reader for each classroom. Convenient days and times are coordinated with the classroom teacher and the parent volunteer. Please contact the reading teacher if you are interested in learning more about the guest reader program.
