The changing nature of our society will place greater demand on students in the future. In order to succeed in the twenty-first century, they must acquire new characteristics and skills. Exposure to and acquisition of other language and cultures enable students to communicate across cultures and gain knowledge of other cultures. They are able to access new knowledge and information that is often only available through the second language, and they develop insights in to their own language and culture. Finally, the acquisition of another language and culture provides students with the unique skills and knowledge that prepare them to interact effectively within the community and global marketplace.
