Fifth Grade 

 

Welcome to fifth grade at Belvedere Elementary. The teachers in our  fifth grade are Mrs. Paez, Mrs. Gardner, Mrs. Slack, and Mrs. Murray.

The fifth grade students will be busy this year! We will complete the Drownproofing program. We are planning to go to Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg for an overnight trip in late May.

  • Develop confident and fluent readers through print and phonemic awareness activities and explicit phonics instruction
  • Engage students in constructing meaning through the teaching of reading comprehension skills and strategies

Grade 5 Goals

Students will...

  • Review phonics knowledge and skills developed in first grade.
  • Continue to work on developing fluency and learning new vocabulary.
  • Read fiction and non-fiction selections organized around concepts from across the curriculum.
  • Refine writing skills to communicate knowledge.
  • Pursue personal and collaborative inquiry through study and research.

Science units include Rocks and Minerals and Physics, Think Globally - Act Locally, and Chemistry. Our Social Studies Units include Colonial America to the Revolution and US Geography.

The assignment book, available through the school is for all students. All fifth grade students are required to have an assignment book.

Spelling is assigned Monday through Thursday. Additional Language Arts may be assigned. Math is assigned on a nightly basis except when a class long test is given. This does mean that students WILL have math homework on weekends. Science and Social Studies require regular review of notes and handouts. Projects may be assigned periodically to include weekends.
