Counseling Center

The Counseling Office is staffed by four counselors and a school psychologist.

  • Grade 6 - Mrs. Habicht
  • Grade 7 - Mr. Norton
  • Grade 8 - Mr. Dunaway
  • Transitions - Mrs. Chandler
  • School Psychologist - Dr.  Prince

Our mission is to work with and for children, parents and faculty to ensure the success of our students academically, socially, and emotionally.  We serve as liaisons between faculty and parents and we serve as supports for our students.

Academic Domain:

Counselors work with faculty and parents to assist students in succeeding in academically rigorous, yet developmentally appropriate courses.  In addition to the school based offerings, information on Advanced Studies can be located by accessing the following websites:  http://www.aacps.org/advancedprograms/, http://www.aacps.org/gifted/cocurricular/index.asp, and http://cty.jhu.edu/.

Additionally, as a service to our students seeking excellence in academics, we offer a Peer Tutoring service after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Eighth grade members of the National Junior Honor Society have been trained to tutor students in all areas of academics.  Parents and teachers may refer students for this service or students may self-refer.  This service is free, and there are activity buses to take students home.  Please contact Mrs. Chandler for more information.

Social Domain:

Middle school presents various challenges and many of those are directly connected to the social dynamics of adolescents.  We work to encourage students to form healthy peer relationships.  However, should students encounter conflicts with one another, they may be referred to the Counseling Office for assistance in resolving difficulties.  In addition to the counseling staff, we offer a Peer Mediator service.  Peer Mediators work with the students involved to solve their own problems.  These mediators have been recommended by their teachers and then trained by the counseling staff to use communication, listening, and questioning skills to guide disputants to a resolution.  Should your student need assistance with social concerns, please contact the grade level counselor.

Emotional Domain:

From time to time a need may exist for students to seek out emotional assistance.  Be it academic, social, or personal stressors, our counseling staff may be able to provide support.  Should there be a need for further services beyond school, our counselors can provide a listing of local resources.  If you are concerned about your student’s emotional well-being, please do not hesitate to contact the grade level counselor.

School Psychologist:

Our counseling staff also works closely with our School Psychologist, Dr. Prince.  She is assigned to our school four days a week; for the 09-10 school year, she’s available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.  Dr. Prince works with students, faculty, and parents, to collaboratively maximize learning potential.   She consults with teachers, administrators, and counselors to develop positive learning experiences for all students. For further information on school based psychological service, please visit, http://www.aacps.org/studentservices/psych.asp.

Dr. Prince also supervises two school psychology interns.  Mr. G. Wochos will be working with 6th and 7th grade students and is at SPMS on Mondays and Tuesdays.  Ms.  S. Sedlik will be working with 8th graders on Thursdays.

For further information and additional programs, please explore, http://www.aacps.org/family/.

Parents who may have questions or concerns should contact the counseling office at 410-647-7900.
