Ms. Katie Saxe
Reading Teacher

West Meade Elementary continues to strive for success for all students
in reading, as well as other subjects. Currently, the students are participating
in the Book-It reading incentive program through Pizza Hut. The reading
program runs from October through March and focuses on encouraging children
to read at home, as well as, in school.
The reading program consists of reading and writing to the students, with
the students, and by the students. We currently use the Open Court Reading
program for instruction. Open Court Reading is a comprehensive language
arts program based on the five essential components of good reading instruction
as outlined in No Child Left Behind: phonemic awareness, phonics,
fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. Featuring high quality literature,
this program enables students to learn to comprehend, form ideas, and communicate
in a highly effective manner.
West Meade has special events throughout the school year to enhance the
reading program. The students enjoy participating in book fairs, Dr. Seuss
Day, the Book-It program celebrations, guest reader days and Story Character
Dress Up Day.
A variety of intervention programs, including Corrective Reading and Early Reading Intervention are used to assist students who are experiencing difficulty in reading. Students who need more challenging material can use the Open Court Classics materials in the classroom.
