Principal's Message

Southgate Elementary School is one of 76 elementary schools located in the Anne Arundel County Public School System.  Our school is a graded, self-contained classroom school with grades kindergarten through five.  The enrollment ranges from 580 - 620.

The school is comprised of four full day kindergarten classes.  There are also multiple classes at each grade level.  This organization allows for departmentalization and teaming at various grade levels.  Southgate also has three full time special education teachers to meet the needs of our special education students in the least restrictive environment.  This means that a majority of the special education students will be instructed in the classroom by both a general educator and the special educator.  The special educator may also be the speech pathologist.

Southgate has full time teachers for art, general music, and physical education, as well as a reading specialist and a media specialist.  We also have a full time guidance counselor.  Part time personnel include the instrumental and band teachers.

The school is allotted three secretaries, a registered nurse shared with another school, a health assistant and a custodial staff of three members.  In addition, we have a cafeteria staff to provide hot lunches for our children.

Mrs. Catherine Gilbert is our Regional Director who visits the school regularly. Personnel are available from the Central Office of the County Board of Education for consultation and assistance on all matters.

Members of the Southgate Elementary staff are ready to serve you.  Please do not hesitate to call the school when you have questions or concerns.

To our prospective and new parents to Southgate, on behalf of the administration and faculty, we welcome you.

Southgate's Mission is to provide a safe, positive, nurturing, and challenging environment for learning.   We strive to help all children realize their full academic potential.
