Beautification Day, April 22, 2008

April 22 is when we celebrate Earth Day.  The first Earth Day was held in 1970.  It is a day when we celebrate our earth and how we can recognize ways to make our world a better place.

On April 22, 2008, Mayo Elementary is holding our annual Beautification Day.  The Mayo Elementary Environmental Club has calculated the size of the flowerbeds next to the building, researched indigenous plants, and studied animal habitats.  All of our front beds will be restored with plants that are native to Maryland.  Another benefit of this will be that these plants will provide habitats for native types of birds and insects.  The MEEC members worked with Mrs. Croteau and Mrs. Woodling to write a grant to get the money to buy the plants that we need.

On Beautification Day, parents, students, and teachers will be joining together to plant these plants in our gardens.  Watch for the information that will be coming home with your children about how you can help on April 22 to make this a Beautification Day to remember!

A Note From the Chair

As we get closer to Earth Day, all of us should use this as a reminder of not just where we have to go, but how far we have come.  When I listen to the radio, watch the TV, or have conversations with friends, it is apparent that there is a whole new fervor to “Be Smart, Be Green, Be Clean”! This is very exciting to me, because it is education that will make the difference in the many efforts to save our Chesapeake Bay, and ultimately, our planet.

Our children will play an integral role in this effort.  As I listen to them talk about what they can do to help, it helps me to remember that there is hope in the form of this growing generation.  My plea to you as parents and friends is that you support the children in their dream of making a difference.  Demonstrate through your own behavior that you too have a vested interest in this movement.  Reduce, reuse, and recycle whenever you can.  Save water and electricity.  The children and I talk about the need to always keep your eyes open and watching for ways that you can conserve, and they are many indeed. Coming up on the weekend of April 19th and 20th, there are many different Earth Day activities to attend with your children and family.  Several suggestions of places to go locally are listed below.  I also recently found a wonderful book:

Big Green Purse: Use Your Spending Power to Create a Cleaner, Greener World

by Diane McEachern

It is an easy read with many wonderful suggestions as to how we can easily make a difference in our world.  I hope to see you at our school Beautification Day, and thank you for your time!
